Group Cruises: Understanding GAP Points
If you are organizing a group cruise, it's important that you understand the ins and outs of Group Amenity Points (or GAP Points, as they're called by the cruise lines). First, GAP Points are offered by the cruise line as an incentive to book on a specific sailing. For instance, if the cruise line is trying to move a specific Caribbean cruise sailing in low season, they might offer a high number of GAP Points to intice the group to book. Cruises during high season generally offer few GAP Points (and sometimes none at all). The number of points groups receive is generally between 2 and 10 points. What can your group do with these GAP Points? Well, they can generally be used to purchase things like a bottle of wine for each stateroom in your group, or a private group cocktail party onboard the ship. There are a variety of incentives you can use the points for - but they are typically used to procure things like photos from the ship's gallery, shipboard credit, a fruit basket, chocolate covered strawberries, hot canapes, etc. All the members of your group will receive the same incentive, so the group leader will need to communicate with the rest of the group so everyone can agree how to spend them.
